How to Make Your Own Outdoor Pillow Cushions

What if awesome outdoor comfort was closer than you thought?

If you like to hang around outdoors, then nothing is quite as comfortable as outdoor pillow cushions. And it's possible for you to enjoy such pillows with a really personal touch.

That's because it's easy to make your own outdoor pillows. Ready to get started? Keep reading to discover everything you need!

Outdoor Pillow Cushions: Get Your Materials

Before you can make your own outdoor pillow cushions, you need to get the right materials. You'll need cushion foam, plywood, fabric, thread, and a sewing machine. You'll also need a zipper, fabric scissors, and a sewing pin.

Gathered all your materials? Now, here are the steps to make your own outdoor cushions.

Measure and Cut

First, measure the width and depth of your furniture seats. Next, add one inch to the width and depth measurements and cut some fabric. You now have the necessary measurements for the top and the bottom of your cushion.

Add the first base measurements together and add one inch for your cushion side panel measurements (this helps you have a 1/2" seam allowance on either side). And to measure side panel height, measure cushion height and add one inch.

Now, you need to cut out the top, bottom, and side panels for all of the outdoor cushions you are making. After you cut the top and bottom panels, line them up (patterns facing) and cut rounded edges on the corners facing out. If you want to make later sewing a bit easier, you can also cut small notches in the shape of a "v" onto those edges.

Pin, Sew, and Attach

Next, take out your sewing pins and use them to put the fabric side patterns together. Along the cushion's front and side, place pins every few inches. Don't forget about the 1/2" seam allowance, and don't forget to leave room on the back for a zipper.

After that, attach the zipper at the end of the bottom panel on the back. It will need to be 1/2" from the edge and sewn to the panels for each of the sides.

Measure, Cut, and Flip

The next step is cutting foam using your previous measurements. With a marker and ruler, you can make precise measurements for where to cut to fit the cushion dimensions. Alternatively, you can always buy pillow inserts.

Now, it's time to put the cushion cover and the padding together. Just make sure your pattern is facing out and add your padding. At this point, your DIY outdoor cushion project is nearly complete!

Waterproof and Decorate

It's time to protect your new outdoor pillow. Use a waterproof spray product to give your outdoor cushion the finish it needs to survive the elements.

After that comes the fun part: decorating using your new outdoor pillows and cushions! Now, you can be more comfortable outside than ever before.
