Love Your Couch, Hate Your Cushions? Here’s What You Need to Know.

Love Your Couch, Hate Your Cushions? Here’s What You Need to Know.

In most homes, the living room is central to relaxing, entertaining, and engaging with fellow family members. A comfortable couch is a big part of this. And, with more people working remotely, you also want your couch to be ergonomic.

Couch cushions play a big role in all of this. If the fabric of your cushions has become worn or the filling limp, you may be looking for solutions. The good news is that, for whatever reason, if you love your couch but don’t want to go out and buy new couch cushions, there are options.

Keep reading to find out how to avoid couch replacement by revitalizing your couch cushions. This article lays out some ways to get your couch back looking great and feeling comfortable, with options for every budget.

Add Pillows and Blankets

One of the easiest ways to adjust the comfort level and look of your couch cushions is to add pillows or blankets. You can use pillows to add padding to the back of the couch or as armrests. If you are looking for additional support in particular areas, consider ergonomic pillows.

Blankets can bring another layer of padding and can double as cover. They also are great for covering worn cushions or changing the couch aesthetic.

Slipcovers are another easy way to change the look and feel of your couch. They won’t compensate for deflated cushioning, but they can add a layer of softness. They also will completely cover cushions that are old or otherwise do not look great.

Add Filling or Batting to Your Couch Cushions

Cushions will lose their form over time. One easy thing you can do is to restuff them. Depending on the size and shape of the cushions, this could be as easy as adding a standard pillow inside the cover.

Old pillows that you no longer use are a perfect option. For a sturdier feel, try plush couch filling. You can buy this as loose poly fiber wrapped in batting to create the size you need.

Simply adding a layer of batting itself can help sagging couch cushions, and can make edges softer and the surfaces appear smoother. Batting is made of cotton or polyester fabric

Cotton batting is typically more expensive than polyester, but is a more “natural” product that will hold its shape for a very long time. Polyester is cheaper and easier to work with. Once the batting is cut to the right size, use an adhesive spray to secure it to the pillow filling.

Replace Your Couch Cushions

If you feel that your cushions are unsalvageable (but wish to retain the covers), replacing them may be the best option. You may be tempted to go with cheap replacements. But, if your couch gets a lot of use, you may find yourself back in the same situation before long.

Quality cushions are worth the investment. Those made with some combination of high-density foam, down, or coil springs will cost more upfront but will be more durable. This can save you money down the road, besides keeping you from the additional headache of repairing or replacing your cushions after a short time.
